Tips for managing your domain name
Your domain name is an essential part of your business
Losing control of your domain can lead to major disruptions in website and email services, potentially affecting your online presence and communication channels.
Most domain names are registered for two or three years in advance. So by the time your domain name is up for renewal, you may have forgotten the password, your email no longer works, or your credit card has expired.
Here are some simple steps you can take to successfully manage your domain name:
- Keep your contact information up-to-date so that you will receive important notifications about your domain name. If you registered your domain name ten years ago with a Hotmail account you rarely check anymore, then you may want to consider updating that. And don’t ignore the notifications.
- Record the user-login and password for your domain account in a safe place.
- Be aware of your domain expiration dates and renew in a timely manner.
- Keep a valid credit card on file in your account. This is the most common reason that domain names expire.
Here are some tips for registering your domain name:
- Register and manage your own domain name.
- Use a current email address for your domain contact information.
- Ensure that you are listed as the Domain Registrant or Owner, and as the Administrative, Billing and Technical Contacts for your domain name.
- If you work with a web designer or IT support person, you can grant them access to your account to manage the technical aspects or to adjust DNS records. You do not need to transfer ownership of the domain name.
